Twenty-Two Cups — The Letters in the Lampstand
Count what the text puts on the lampstand. ‘Three calyxes made like almonds in one branch, a knob and a flower, and three calyxes made like almonds in one branch, a knob and a flower — so for the six branches which are coming out from the lampstand’ (Exodus 25:33). Six branches, three cups each: eighteen. ‘And in the lampstand are four calyxes made like almonds’ (Exodus 25:34) — four more on the shaft itself. Eighteen and four: twenty-two almond-blossom cups, beaten out of the one talent of pure gold.
Twenty-two is the number the text gives the lampstand’s cups. And twenty-two is the number of the letters — the whole alphabet the scriptures were written in.
The text does not say the cups are the letters. It only gives the same number twice — twenty-two cups on the lampstand that holds the light, twenty-two letters carrying the Word that the light shines by.
And each letter is a gate. The fourth letter is Dalet — the door itself. You enter through one gate into what the letter means, and there stands another. ‘Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, into His courts with praise’ (Psalm 100:4). The city at the end has twelve gates with the tribes’ names on them (Revelation 21:12) — gates you go through, not past. So with the letters: twenty-two gates, each one opening into its meaning, each one entered, not passed by.
